Teaching

I have been involved in collegiate teaching since 2010 in small liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and large universities. I have taught courses in historical musicology, children’s cultures, world music, music theory, musicianship, and choral ensembles. My teaching focuses on using the interconnected aspects of performance, theory, and research to engage students in music holistically. I approach music education from the perspective that all students, regardless of their learning modality and initial competence in the subject, can connect with and deepen their understanding of music from multiple disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. In order to achieve this, whether in the context of music fundamentals, a vocal ensemble, or a music history class, I establish classroom practices that create a safe and inclusive environment where students can grow through their mistakes and use their strengths and interests to expand their intellectual horizons.
