St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows
Prelude: Adagio from Organ Sonata No. 1 - F. Mendelssohn (o)
Choir: Love Never Faileth - Jeanie Donaldson (pf)
Offertory: Galliardo VII - P. Philips (pf)
Postlude: Prelude in Classical Style - G. Young (o)
Today is not Sunday, but things have been so crazy with the quarter drawing to a close that this is the only moment I've got to remember last Sunday's worship pieces. Everything must be complete by Thursday, and at this point the big things are choir concert and research paper on The Tale of Tsar Saltan.
Melndelssohn is great and slightly Romantic, not like the Rheinberger I'm doing this weekend. I would truly love to play more of him, but this is the only section which is short enough for some sort of place in a service. Even so it felt a bit long.
Jeanie is a choir member who wrote this wonderful little piece. I really enjoy her refrain, especially the resolution to a deceptive cadence which really launches into the contrasting sections. Pretty fun.
Pete's Galliardo can't decide whether it's in duple or triple! Really fun and surprisingly gorgeous piece. It may not have made some Historical Performance snobs happy, but I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how else people will hear pieces from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
This one is a classic. Big effect. Little worry. Nice and loud in the end.
