Dienstag Dictung XXV; Measures

Picture
Rothko

Three measures of breadth I take
that the heart, the hand, and the foot make:
the candid inches between the eyes of confidence,
the width of a gull's back in the hand that shot it,
and the stretch of water that cannot be walked upon.

And three measures of slenderness I put to these,
in which the eyes, the ear, and the mind meet:
the slimness of a boy's ankle when he is alive to dance,
the whisper that draws a hill across a strath,
and that which separates self-respect from self-regard.
